Cu Chi Tunnels

cu chiThe tunnels around the Củ Chi are part of a huge network of tunnels stretching across much to the Vietnamese country, many of which were constructed during the French colonial era.

They were constructed with simple hand tools, and were expanded considerably during the second Vietnam War, and gave a strategic  advantage to local  North Vietnamese sympathisers over the Americans. People lived, ate, slept, gave birth, studied and even married in the tunnels. However it is estimated that over 10,000 people lost their lives in the area. The Americans and their South Vietnamese allies also lost a considerable number. Read more

Cherdchai Chomtavat officer over the years of walking on the course of the Japanese road built to connect northern Thailand to Burma. On it’s opening in the mid 1990’s the then governor of the province remarked that it was a remarkable museum, but that many thousands of local Thais were forced to work on this road, and many thousands died of malnutrition, brutal work and disease.
