A trip past some of the places of military interest – Yangon (Rangoon) to Mawlamyine (Moulmein) Part 1

Taukkyan Cemetery

Taukkyan Cemetery

Today we can explore many of the often passed locations on the route to Bago, and going on further to the Sittang River and Golden Rock, and further still to Mawlamyine and Thanbyuzayat. We will briefly look at ome of the locations of actions which took place in WW2, which changed the world forever

In 1942 the muddled planning and confuse leadership of the British met the determined, war experienced and tactic driven Japanese invasion.

In 1945 the diseased, ill equipped and defeated Japanese army retreated along these same roads and railway lines, routed by the reformed, brilliantly led and well equipped British Indian army – many of the units being those same who were in the shameful retreat of 1942.
Heading north out of Yangon we pass the  the Taukkyan Military Cemetery and still heading towards Mawlamyine, one of the first locations along the route is Hlegu

The Rama VI Military Museum, Bangkok.

Rama VI Statue Lumpini Park

Rama VI Statue Lumpini Park

Many visitors to Bangkok pass Lumpini Park and see the large statue outside the main entrance. It is a statue of King Vajiravudh, Rama VI, the monarch who reigned from 1910 until his untimely death in 1926.  There are several museums in Bangkok which commemorate this monarch, but we shall visit a little known one which is open to the public and is free!

On July 22nd 1917, King Vajirvudh declared war on the central powers, primarily the Empires of Germany and Austro -Hungary, and Thailand (Siam at the time) joined the allies by sending an expeditionary force to France in the hope that this would assist in global justice for Siam and that it would gain national and international benefits.

The outcome of hostilities was by no means certain at this time, but eventually an armistice was signed in November 1918, and Siam, as one of the victors, won plaudits and praise .

The Commonwealth War Cemeteries in and near Yangon, Myanmar (Burma).

Taukkyan War Cemetery

Taukkyan War Cemetery

If you are fortunate enough to visit Yangon, you will no doubt want to visit some of the many popular tourist sites around the city. Open all year round from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm, you may wish to visit the Commonwealth War Cemeteries. There are three in Myanmar, all maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and in this post we will visit two. One, in central Yangon is little visited, which is a shame as it is, like all the others beautifully maintained and a place of tranquility. The other lies 32 miles north of the Yangon city, just before the junction of the roads to Pyay ( Prome) and Bago (Pegu). For details of the third cemetery, please see this post A trip around Mawlamyaing ( Moulmein) including Thanbyuzayat and Kyaikkami (Amherst).

Another post details the fighting which took place just a few miles from the Taukkyan cemetery in 1942 during the British retreat. Battle of the Taukkyan Roadblock 7th March 1942.

Most of the  dead of that action have no known grave as the rout of the British army by the Japanese led, to the great regret of those involved, to the abandonment of corpses all along the retreat.

The battle for Meiktila March1945

The remains of a Japanese light tank from the Ha Go campaign, plinthed at the Nagoyan temple in Meiktila

Following the Japanese retreat from the borders of India after the defeats at Imphal and Kohima, they were followed by the retrained and reorganized 14th Army. Although many of the units of the British Indian army were the same as those involved in the bitter retreat of 1942, they were now confident and led by competent commanders.

Once they re-entered Burma the army split up into various sections, all making their way towards different objectives on the Irrewaddy river. Lt. General Slim, the British commander, has devised plans to fool the Japanese as to his targets. His immediate opponent, Lt-General Katamura Shihachi ‘s 15th army, was in agreement with his superior General Kimura Heitaro that the British would head for Mandalay.

Yangon Walks 4 Merchant Street

former bank of Bengal

former bank of Bengal

This walk starts where walk 3 finished, at Maha Bandoola Square, where it meets Merchant Street.

Merchant Street, it’s name from colonial times remains unchanged, was the centre of commercial business in pre- war Rangoon. To the west of Pansodan were banks and insurance companies, and to the east mercantile and light manufacturing businesses.  At the end of the 19th century there were also hotels, including the “dreadful” guest house (Kipling’s words), Jordan’s Hotel in which Rudyard Kipling spent his one night in Rangoon.

The battles of Mandalay 1942 and 1945

Royal Palace from Pagoda hill Mandalay

Royal Palace from Pagoda Hill Mandalay

Mandalay, the former royal capital of Upper Burma, is dominated by the  towering Pagoda Hill, which overlooks it centre, the former Royal Palace, which under British colonial authority became Fort Dufferin. The fort still contained the old royal palace, erected on the orders of King Mindon in 1858, but it was also the location of the British administration in central Burma which were overthrown by the Japanese in 1942. To the Japanese this city was the symbol of a Burmese monarchy which they sought to replace with a puppet regime – they were so determined to take it in 1942, and deend it in 1945 -come what may -and these policies led to massive destruction. But there are still many thing to see.

Yangon Walks 3 Maha Bandoola Road

Street yangon

Colonial era frontage Yangon

This walk will take us past some of the most prominant building in the centre of Yangon  starting with an old administative building and finishing at a site commemorating the independence of Burma in 1948.

We start at the end of walk 2, on Maha Bandoola road, named after a famous Burmese general. He had initial success against the British in 1824 in fighting in the Arakan, and therefore  his name was chosen to be commemorated in such a principal street in the city

The street was formally Dalhousie Street, named after the  Governor General of India at the time of the Second Anglo Brumese war and it was he would ordered that territory upto Magwe and above Toungoo be annexed by Britain, and this included Rangoon
